As some one already posted, this has been discussed to death, but for some reason people still don\'t get the facts straight. Everyone thinks basketball and football programs make tons of money. They don\'t.
Pretty much every DII, DIII, NAIA football and basketball team is a net loser. In DI you have about half the teams losing money or breaking even. Half the teams make money, but for most of them it\'s not much. That leaves you with a few select universities that do, I admit, make millions of dollars in specific years. However, how much money did it take for them to get to the stage where they are making money. How many years did it take?
Check out these stats. From 2004.

On a completely different note, how many of the athletes in DI football/basketball make good grades, graduate, stay out of trouble, have a positive impact on their school.
My solution to the problem. Restructure Title IX so that it is not forcing schools to restrict men from playing and goading women in to playing. Relax the standards for complying with Title IX. It is clear that women are not as interested in playing sports in college as men. Why should men suffer because of this? Place a limit on the number of coaches, coaches salaries, player scholarships, and overall money for football teams. Perhaps go even further and make a standard number of scholarships for each sport to be regulated by the NCAA.
