What would you say is an appropriate time in 400 for a male freshman miler who has run 4:48?
My guy just ran 60.4 and I think it's super slow. Agree?

Ya, 57 sounds like it would be the slowest possible for a frosh like that.. I mean even if you have no leg speed you can go sub 60.
use the 4 second rule
72 seconds per lap for the 1600
68 for the 800
64 for the 400
But freshman (and high schoolers in general) generally have less endurance so a freshman to have only 60.4 speed is unusual.
Freshmen are all over the place. It's a wierd time in terms of physical development. Some people haven't even started growing. Some are done growing. Some are right in the middle of a growth spurt.
Perhaps the guy has lots of natural endurance but hasn't even hit puberty yet. Or his coordination hasn't caught up with him (thus impacting his speed).
Anyway, I've known plenty of people who have run SAS 400's as frosh and run pretty fast even the following year. Of course, that's no guarantee what your guy will do.
Whatever else, if you look at it the opposite way, that's a pretty decent mile time for a frosh who can "only" go 60.
I've run 4:42 and 16:15 and couldn't break 61. Heck I can barely run a 30 second 200.
if he close his last lap of a mile in a time close to his 400m pb it shouldnt matter what time he can run for a straight 400m. he might have super good endurance rather than blinding speed.

No it's not. Had I run that fast at 14 for 400/mile I'd have been doing backflips! I ended up doing 4:16/9:10 in high school and 4:00/8:22sc in college. Your kid is doing great. Remind him of it.
the fastest i ran as a frosh was 67, 218 and 4:50....sometimes it takes a while for a frosh to learn to race different events
