can anyone tell me about the running in this city? are there many dirt roads, trails, tracks near by? how is the running community there? just thinking of relocating out west near that area...

There are some sections of trail throughout the town. I still spend 1/4 to 1/2 of each run on pavement. The trails are nearly all exposed, out in the open, pounded by the sun. Quite a few off leash dogs get annoying, even though there are leash laws.
The MSU track is easy to access and near a trail.
The winters are bitter and lots of snow. I think I need to use a face mask next time. The spring is full of thunder showers. Summer and fall are better.
I haven't explored much, but I'm sure there are a lot of trails within 10-30 min drive. I think they're gonna be uphill one way, downhill on the way back, and you might want bear spray.
There are thousands of miles of dirt roads and trails, and several tracks available to use. The running community is solid, and there are lots of excellent races in the area. Trails are much more than just up and down, there are rolling loops, forested trails, open high desert runs, beastly mountains... really everything you could want. There are also a couple dirt trails that run through town, although most of the good stuff is a 10 to 30 minute drive.
If you move out and bring your horse, do us all a favor and buy the appropriate amount of acreage to support a horse. Too many people move out here to live their romanticized western dream, and they put 2 horses on a lot the size of a postage stamp, degrading the land and water quality therein. It's become subdivision hell here over the 15 years. If you're willing to accept the culture of the area you'll do just fine. Just don't complain about things like dogs off leashes or you'll come off sounding like a stuffy out-of-stater. The area isn't much like it used to be, but it's still a great place to live. Winters are cold, so be prepared to deal with that.
If dogs are allowed to be off-leash here then why do all the trails post signs that state there are leash laws? Sounds like you're the "out-of-stater" if you can't even follow your own local laws.

Bozeman has a leash law. Your dog must be leashed when on a walk.

This is exactly the type of whining I'm talking about. I never said there isn't a law... practically every city has a law about keeping dogs on leashes. I don't run my dog through the city anyway, especially with trails and isolated roads to run. If some dude's out running a mountain trail with his dog, who honestly cares except some uptight yuppies that worry about nothing more than posting links to Bozeman's pet laws. A dog running by you isn't going to affect you in anyway. Just smile, wave, and go about your business, or better yet just move back to wherever you came from. Dogs need to run, so do people. 30 years of running and I've never had a problem with a single dog.
Bozeman. Ugh. So funny, did the OP mention bringing a horse?!? Standard Montana
I was running up at haylite last fall, up there all alone worried about people shooting me cause bear season had just started. I saw a couple of hunters so I knew they were in the area. All the sudden something comes charging at me out of the woods. Scared silly, I would have shot the damn thing had I been packing, but as this was a short run I was not. Turns out it was just a dog off a leash. I was going to warn the owners that the thing could have really easily been mistaken for a bear and shot, but I didn't cause I felt that if they didn't realize that already then they were taking that risk.

ha. FTFY.
i have spent quite a bit of time in bozeman over the last 15 years. there are great trails for everyone. orange running shorts and t-shirts certainly don't hurt. leave your whiney suburbian attitude at the border. it can be shitty weather. the views and the people more than make up for it though. don't worry about dogs. there's not that many. i'd be more worried about the bears or big cats.
