So I am a young, active life-long vegetarian who eats healthily, lifts weights, runs/bikes/plays tennis/basketball, fairly frequnetly. However, I am 5'11" and weigh 195 pounds. I have a muscular build so a lot of it is muscle for sure, but I have a significant amount of pudge covering those muscles. I don't eat more than most people; I typically eat less than most. I also eat healthier food--rice and beans, soy products, etc. I do a lot of powerlifting, such as squats, cleans, etc. But no matter what I do, I cannot lose any of the fat. I have had the same amount of fat since I was 14 despite drastic variations in exercise levels. I started focusing on my diet a month or two ago to see if that was the problem. Without changing my habits, I recorded what I ate and discovered that I typically consume around 1500 to 2200 calories a day. With protein shakes, I get about 30-60 grams a day, so I should be okay there. The thing is, I know this is a low amount of calories, but a) I have been getting stronger in the gym, b) I have plenty of muscle c) I'm not low on energy and d) I haven't lost any fat whatsoever.
What the heck is going on? Do I have hypothyroid? I also seem to have a receding hairline at age 19, am slightly irritable a lot of the time, and have trouble with short term memory despite being really smart, objectively speaking, overall. For example, I am always saying things like, "Oh that's like...wait, er....who is that again...you know, the guy from Batman Begins..." like all the time. Tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon out the wazoo. Also, on short term memory tests I fing bomb. I have also gone through bouts of excessive stress that borderlines on depression. I am listing these things because I saw that they were symptoms of hypothyroid. Maybe I am just a hypochondriac and a simple tweak to my routine will help me lost that weight/my other problems are in my head. Thoughts?
