I'm an East Coast guy but can offer some California suggestions that stuck with me. Then all the California people can bash me.
Santa Barbara, La Jolla, Carmel, were some of the prettiest towns I've ever been to, and the San Simeon Hearst Castle tour and Alcatraz tours were memorable. If you want to get loaded, do so in Manhattan Beach.
Nah. I won't bash you (California resident from 1989-1993). Santa Barbara is great. My wife's aunt lives there. Carmel is nice too. Never been to La Jolla. The Hearst Castle is cool, but I've never done the Alcatraz tour though I've seen it from SF many times. If stopping in San Francisco, might as well see the sea lions at Pier 39. Regarding getting loaded, we used to go to Capitola for that, or "Crapitola" as we used to call it. But, pretty much you can get loaded anywhere -- just don't drive afterwards.
