How serious was Dixon's injury sustained in the 4x100 relay? Has anyone seen such an incident like that before?

what happened?
Dixon got smacked in the face during/before the exchange. Was last reported leaving in ambulance and was seen with a bloody towel on face.
shit! and I've given him a ride to the weight room before. Just a bloody nose? or is it worse?
We could not figure what happened, he almost stopped dead in his tracks very suddenly, about 30/40m short of the handoff, it looked like he had been shot. Took them completely out of the race. It is surprising he got going again and delivered the stick.
He got poked in the eye.
It was an absolutely freak occurence, something I don't think I've ever seen before.
Dixon was running first leg for the US team, and as he was approaching the exchange zone to hand off to Wallace Spearmon, the second runner for the team on the inside (Canada I believe) started accelarate in preparation for the incoming stick - taking off a little too early, as Dixon had already put a few yards on the first Canadian runner.
The 2nd leg for Canada thrust his arm back to get the stick, and his fingers went right into Dixon's face. Dixon reached up immediately to his left eye, and came almost to a complete stop, stunned by what had happened.
He had the good sense to start running again, but Spearmon had to slow as he was reaching the end of the zone, and hadn't gotten the pass yet. The the stopped an turned around to see why the stick never arrived, only to be met by the arriving Dixon, stick in one hand, other hand covering his left eye.
I was sitting on the turn where it happened. I couldn't see any blood, but Dixon had his hand covering the eye the rest of the time he was on the infield - only a couple of minutes while he was evaluated by paramedics - then taken off to the hospital.
We need stuff like this, and the Stanford women's DMR leadoff getting spiked in the head, if T&F is ever going to get the airplay that Ultimate Fighting, WWE, and NASCAR get - it's the sight of blood and the chance of potential mayhem and bodily harm that draw audiences these days.
I don't think the Canadian was reaching for the stick when he smacked Dixon. He was just starting his acceleration, and the right arm went way out as he pivoted to start running.

I am not sure, but I think that Canada might have gotten DQ'ed.
