Maybe those are considered big jumps as well.
Knox Exton
Huge step up from freshman year. He did run a 17:55 in one 5K freshman year though
Huge step up from junior to senior year
Well, I coached a high school Kansas kid from high 18 to low 17 at 5 k XC . 2 1/2 months summer magic . 🧙♂️🔥🧙♂️🌻🧙♂️
I went from a 9:38 3200 meters as a freshman to a 8:54 sophomore. Puberty is helping a lot!
Back in high school I opened up my freshman season with a 22:30 5k. By my senior year my PR was 15:49.
Funny enough, when I raced that same course as a senior I crashed my car on the way to the meet, made it to the line with a few minutes to spare, then got trampled at the start and limped to a 18:45 lol.
my times from freshman to senior year:
9 - avg. 21 minute 5k, range: 20:45 to >27:00; 5 mpw summer training average (8th to 9th)
10 - avg. 18, 17:45 to 18:15; 25 mpw summer
11 - avg. 17:30, 17:05 to 18:20; 35 mpw summer
12 - avg 16, 15:55 to 17:35*; 40 mpw summer
I improved each year, but it'd always be in a random race. My sophomore year I ran 18:15 like 5 times before running a 17:50, 17:49, and then 17:44. Junior year I oscillated between 17 and 18 which was strange, and senior year I also oscillated a fair amount but that was mainly because of competition and course difficulty. Ran a 15:55 5k and then ran a 15:40 something 3 mile on a (much) tougher course a week later but didn't approach that again.
60 mpw this summer and I hope to break 15
The most amazing story related to this happened in 1975 when I was a Junior in HS. We had a guy who came out for cross country who was a Senior. He was a swimmer and was like a state placer in swimming sprints as a Junior but he wasn't a state champion. Anyway, he comes out and wins the first XC duel. Then he wins the next one. He wins every race until the state championship where he gets second. The thing about it is he didn't train. Maybe 20 miles a week.
So he then goes to swimming. Doesn't run at all. Gets second or third in a couple of races at state in Swimiming.
Comes out for track of of no training in mid March.
Still doesn't train. Even less than 20 miles a week and complaining that he was injured. We used to joke that we kept track of miles per week. He kept track of minutes in the whirlpool.
So he runs like 10:20 in his first two mile. 10:01 in his second. 9:55 in his third one. He ends up winning state in a bizarre two mile where a guy took everybody in 62 and 2:10 and everybody died. He wins in 9:38.
Gets a full schollie to University of Oklahoma based on potential (this was the last year before scholarship reductions).
Hurt during cross country and indoor. Doesn't do much.
Runs the 5K in outdoor track. Starts out at 15 minutes. Drops about 10 seconds a race off of limited training. Maybe 40-50 miles a week. Ends up at the end of the season around 14:15.
Decides he doesn't like running that much. Quits team and gives up scholarship (parents were wealthy).
Never seen anything like that guy. No telling what he could have done had he applied himself.
When they switched the lunch time pizza from Papa John's to Round Table...biggest improvement I have seen in high school.
Couple of more big jumps from 2020 to 2021:
First year of HS track I ran 5:59 for the 1600… was super stoked to break 6. Junior year ran 4:38 for 1600, never competed in my senior year due to Covid-19, but figure I was in right around 4:30 shape based off of workouts.
THIS is the LetsRun thread I can get behind. Coach long enough and you have so many good stories. Positivity rules. I’d love this thread to become the new endless “Down Goes The Dow”.
If we're talking high school to college improvement people should be reminded about this guy. Yeah, I know, he's in over his head, just sneaking into the 1500 final. But c'mon, look where he's come from.
Wait, he was a 22 year old SOPHOMORE?
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
