What are some huge improvements you've seen in high school? I remember a girl in our section who was running something like 24-25 minutes for a 5k in 10th grade. In 11th grade she ran 19 minutes and in 12th grade she ran 18:10.

18:20-15:40

I'm still slow (although a bit faster now than I was in HS), but in HS my first 5k was 28:56 (freshman) and my fastest (junior) was 19:11.
a guy on my team went from running 23 minutes as a fat freshman to 16:50's as a senior.

I did my first 5k in 19:59 and ran 16:37 my senior year. Or 5:21 in the mile as a frosh and 10:00 for 3200m before leaving
i ran 28min for 6km in year 7 of high school. it is now my last year of school and i have recently run 25.34 for 8km
Ran 24 minutes and change for 3 miles as a freshman. Ran 17:25 as a sophmore. Never got much faster than that though.
I saw a girl go from being flat as a board to a Double D.
"They're real and they're spectacular!"
I went from 4:59 in the mile as a freshman to 4:25 as a sophomore.

i had a teammate in high school who went from being a 30+ min 5ker who was DFLing in the JV race sophomore year to running 18-19 min and low-mid 4:50s for the 1600 by his senior year.
there were rumors that a kid from california a few years back, Troy Warner, ran a high 20's, like 27 or 28 minute (probably grossly exaggerated and probably improved by the end of his freshman year), 3 mile his first time around the block his freshman year and ended up winning the MTSAC invite his senior year in sub-15.
Scott Fry ran 10:45 3200 as a freshman and got down to 8:48 or whatever it was. That's a pretty good improvement.
Don't be so hard on yourself, Bedell.
Two guys who have stepped up on the national high school scene now, were in the same state class as me in Arkansas. Layne Nixon of Woodlands, Tex, previously of Springdale Harber,AR, ran 10:0's as a sophomore in AR and 9:16 at the woodlands meet a week or two ago. Micheal Hammond ran 19 flat as a sophomore on our state course, then 4:34 at state in the mile, his junior year he ran 4:15 after moving to Midlothian VA, and last year he got 10th at FL regionals and 38th at Nats. I would be suprised if anyone can top those two. They grew up running, but moving to prestigious schools made a difference in their future.
Freshman year of HS I ran my first race and they didn't even keep the watch going for me, but they said I was somewhere in the high 28's. Sophomore year I went sub 19.

another former midlo guy who now runs at va tech, billy berlin, was something like a 22min 5k runner as a soph and got down into the low 16s or better his seniot year i think. now he has run 3:41 and 1:49.
My first ever 5k xc race was 20:05 my freshman year. Ran 15:52 my senior year.
Alan
Freshman year I went out for Indoor track and ran :60 in the 400.
Junior year I ran 48.8!
In College I ran 1:49 and 3:48
Lesson I learned???....run more than 15 miles a week. Nothing gets you better at running than running!!!!
