Do you believe that an attitude of invincibility can be created in someone who doesn't possess it by the time they're in their early teens?
I have a relatively talented freshman (8th grade 1600m - 4:45, 800m - 2:10, 400m - 54) who seems content with cross country times in the high 17's and low 18's for 5k. He ran hard during the season in middle school but didn't really do much training outside of the season. He does everything I ask in practice. He's diligent about recording workouts, stretching, and taking care of injuries. I couldn't ask for an easier kid to coach.
My concern is that until he develops and attitude of "I WILL NOT lose" he won't really develop into the runner he could be.
Can anyone offer real experiences in how a coach helped them develop a hotter competitive fire? I'm not really interested in psychological theories. I want examples of how a coach really helped you with this side of training.
Thanks.
