What do you think? The Supreme Court will, hopefully, put this to rest early this year.

Sounds good to me. I don't see anything cruel about putting someone who raped an 8-year-old to death.
I would gladly flip the switch myself.
Umm, yes. Took me a whole .02 seconds to make my decision.
O.K. w me. They should also make it a capital crime to commit a crime under the color of authority. There's too many crooked cops that need to be executed for drug dealing, assasinations, roadside justice, etc.
why do you keep posting the same question?

Because now it's at a different stage of its development. The Court will definitely be taking a look at it. I figure letsrunners' opinions might differ and it's interesting to see people's feelings about the topic.
i also agree-however, making the punishment for child rape the same as the punishment for murder in some states potentially gives those same rapists incentive to kill the victim, because they are put to death, if caught, either way

That and the fact that a vast majority of child abuse/rape takes place by folks from within the family. How often will family members be faced with that decision? Report and subject a loved one to the death penalty or don't report and subject another loved one to sexual abuse.
It's not a solution and it's been addressed by the Court, already. The age distinction is one that a few states have concocted but it's not supported by any rule of law.
No. Our govt. has proven inept applying the death penalty equally and correctly. I'd prefer their screw up's have the downside limited to unjustified imprisonment and losing the future wrongful prosecution lawsuit.
Besides, from a rational perspective, the anti-death penalty people will spend so much money fighting each case that it winds up costing more to execute a prisoner than confine him or her.
It makes for a great hot button sound bite and I'd flip the switch for anyone that did this to my kid. But I'm not in favor of capital punishment for society.
The death penalty is wrong and it's a disgrace. Only God has the right to give life and take life. Circumstances do not matter.
This case is way too weak to challenge the scope of the death penalty. This girl change her story numerous times and eventually accused her stepfather a year later. There was no rape kit and no DNA evidence to link him to the rapes. These days there are so many heinous crimes against children, it should be easier to find a good one. Child pornographers should definitely be put to death.

The Catholic church would be absolutely decimated. Fine by me.
They'll find a loophole for clergy. After all, how many child-molesting priests have actually served prison sentences?
Funny. Why does it seem the pervert is always an Irish priest ? You would think it would be someone from Texas, or a retired from the U.S. Navy. But no, it usually involves the Irish.
I don't understand why the supereme court is ruling on it, it sounds like a state issue to me. I don't really care one way or the other, except it makes it difficult to release someone who was wrongly convicted if they've already been executed.

actually I agree, but you'd never see it enforced, and it would never pass.
and with Child rape, I also fully agree, but kids are so f***ed up these days who's to know that they'd lie over an F on a school paper or about some adult their parents told them did it when they slept?
lots of questions, lots of scenarios where it would be more stable to not kill people and let the victims suffer. As gross as this sounds, I would rather have a few kids get raped, than 1 lie about it, and get an adult put down that brings down the whole system. Sometimes you gotta pick the lesser of two evils and destroying the criminal justice system (although its already pretty bad) is about the last thing I'd want to do, especially during a recession/depression/war/natural disaster.
you understand.
If we killed all the dirty cops and all the pedophiles, the earth's population would shrink 10%. Thats how messed up most of humanity is. Ignorant, infantile cops and child predators.
I mean, we're talking about the entire catholic church here. We're also talking about 30% of all cops. Then we got all the other pedophiles on the fringe who only do it to their family members. That stuff is pretty common. 1/4 of everyone, everywhere has been violated as a child by an adult. Like you can cure that- that would take millions of years to breed out. Humans are just evil creatures.
How do we seperate the good from the bad? Not so easy.
I think what will happen to him in prison will be much worse than death. In no time the guy will look like a donut.
Whatever the outcome, considering there were over 16,000 murders in the US in 2007 - and only 42 murderers were actually executed in 07 - I rather think that child rapists wouldn’t lose any sleep, worrying about the possibility of getting the lethal injection.
As much as I dislike saying it, this is why we need to put rfid chips in people.
wouldn't it be great if we could do that without people knowing? Imagine the naughtiness we'd get to observe.
"Uh, commander, your wife's rfid chip has been next to this 29 y/o male's rfid chip for the last 45 minutes..."
"Oh, look that priest's rfid chip has been next to the choir-boy's rfid chip for the last 30 minutes"
"Um, Mr. President, your rfid chip has been next to the interns for over 10 minutes, we need you for a national security breifing about possible terrorist activity at airports"
"this man's rfid chip was at the scene of every one of the murders"
"these rfid chips were the ones in the bank when it was robbed"
I could go on and on but you get the picture.
