Im about to run my first marathon. When I do my trainers will have a little over 500 miles on them. They seem to be in good condition exept for a little wear on the soles. Should I go ahead and get new shoes, or can I wait until after.

0/10. A really pathetic attempt.
This is a very common question among first time marathoners. The general rule is that you want to have 70-80 miles on a pair of shoes that you are going to use for a marathon. But in your case, it seems you are stuck between going old or brand new. I am inclined to say just go un in the 500 mile pair unless the shoes are a model that you both very much like and have worn many times before. My inclination is to just go with the old pair.
How much time do you have? If it is this weekend I would agree with Irishguy, if it is next weekend I would say get another pair.
I did my last marathon in an old pair and I really think it hurt me quite a bit. It wasn't the main cause of me running bad but it definitely contributed to it. Your legs are going to get pounded so make sure you have some cushioning in the shoes.
See if you can get a new pair of the same shoe if you don't have much time. That should be a safe answer.
I use a new pair, of the same shoe as I run my long MP runs in, I put 5-15 miles on them a week or two beforehand just to make sure they feel ok.
