a teammate had an injury once that hurt to run, and hurt to bike, so he ran in place for several weeks, for an hour or more at a time. He even did two a days, if I remember correctly. Anyway, when he came back, he picked up right where he left off and ran a provo time in the steeple.
When I first started running as a young teen I did a lot of running in place. I would attach earphones to the family stereo, crank up the volume as loud as it would go, and run in place, barefoot on a carpeted floor, for 30 minutes to an hour at a time. I think that it had a positive training effect though it is hard to say. I ran track that year as a 13 year old and was able to run a 5:20 mile with most of my base being running in place.
That said, I don't know if I would do such a thing now.
