There's a good 45-49 runner in Mississippi who, according to Active.com's road racing rankings, ran something like 40 5Ks last year, ranging from 20:20 down to 18:15 or so. Not quite what you're asking about, but it has me thinking. I know him; he kicks my ass every time we cross paths. I'm going to race more in 2008.
I think quarters are good to do any time of year because you go fast, lol
At least once a week during my base phase I do 200 meter sprints all out. I usually do about 4 of them but I take full recovery of about 8 minutes.
Many world class runners do.
Yes, I do 1200s, 800s and 400s in base building.
