The NFL player mile time thread and the Mo Greene mile time thread reminded me of this.
I played high level amature/semi pro baseball for two years. I still ran when I played about 50 miles a week. I know it hurt my baseball but I still ran. I have poor fast twitch skills and thus when I played baseball I was the slowest sprinter on the team. Some of my teammates simply could not believe that I had a fair deal of success as a middle distance runner. One of my teammates felt so strongly about it that he bet me he could beat me in a race. He was in the top three on the team for sprinting speed and he was fairly confident.
In the baseball off season I would run an indoor track race series. I contacted this teammate of mine about a week before a two mile race and told him to be there or be square. The results were about what one would expect. He was with me for the first 500 meters and then faded badly. The track was short (11 laps per mile) and I ended up lapping him several times. I ran something like 10:45 and won and he simply could not believe that my slow ass had whupped him. I think that he ran about 15 or 16 minutes and I do remember he came in last.
I am still friends with this guy to this day and I tease him about this often.
Now that you have read through my borning and long winded story, what are letsrun's thoughts?
