I'm a fourth year medical student planning on going into either primary care or emergency medicine. My issue is that I would be against referring patients to psychiatrists in most cases. How will this go over when I start my residency next year?

What about referring patients to therapists/clinical psychologists?
I suggest that you consider a career in radiology or pathology.
Part of your job as a physician is to stay current on medical research, and educate yourself to critically appraise data, not regurgitate the latest headlines.
If you have data to justify why you act contrary to the norm (i.e. the majority of your peers), you can probablly justify it (depending on the quality of data). If you just have your opinion which runs contrary to accepted practice and the current literature, you are open to being sued.

Amen. Obviously, a huge difference exists between believing that psychiatric drugs are over-Rx'd and believing that they should never be used for anyone, ever.
It might behoove you to get to know the various psychiatrists you might be referring patients to--while HMOs tend to dumb doctors down a good deal, you may find that you have a choice of doctors with differing "philosophies" WRT medication.
As, of course, will also be true with patients---some will never take a psych drug. Some will insist on one. And so on.
