Clitheroe has friends in high places, how else can she be on the 'developing' athletes funding at such an advanced age. Unfortunately the endurance side of UKA is just a clique, if you are not in it then you will consistently miss out.

She's on the development funding because she ran world class times in her first season competing in the 3km chase, including several times that would have smashed the pre-Hattie Dean British record. I'm also fairly sure that as a 4.01 1500m runner and major championship finalist who would have missed out on any funding at all (as a 1500m athlete) because of her age, she's more than deserving of the small amount of help that development funding supplies. Bear in mind that even the highest level of development is only £4500 a year.
Nothing for Dan Robinson? McCormick? Jon Brown? yet we fund Clitheroe?????? Come on its a load of bollocks
I think it is fair to say that Brown, McCormick, and Robinson should definitely be getting something... without saying that Clitheroe should not.
and what about Lemoncello? is he to get nothing? a truely developing athlete like him should be getting "development" funding over has beens like Clithero
I think that its unfair for us to start suggesting that certain athletes are more deserving than others of financial assistance, after all we don't know all the facts behind each individual case.
What is sad is that we cannot fund more athletes (particularly distance athletes), agree the likes of McCormick etc should be receiving some kind of package but I can also think of half a dozen other athletes that fall into this category. In regards to Helen, I think we should just be pleased that an endurance athlete is on funding afterall its mainly the sprints who are receiving the majority of the support.
Have you checked what the performance criteria are to get Podium Funding? They are quite hard to meet in male long endurance.
So who are the selectors, and what is their "professional experience"?
2006:
Chairman of the panel is Alan Storey, UKA Senior Performance Manager – Endurance. He is joined by Spencer Barden, UKA Senior Coordinator for Endurance; Nick Anderson, Senior Men’s team Coach; Jenny Clague, Senior Women’s Team Coach; Bob Ashwood, Under 23 Men’s Team Coach; Mick Woods, Under 23 Women’s Team Coach; Cliff Robinson, Counties Athletics Union Secretary and UK Cross Challenge Coordinator; and Steve Benson, who will act as observer.
Yes realise that it is pretty hard to meet the criteria but its a great shame that UKA can't set up a scheme where by athletes who don't meet the criteria for lottery funding recieve some kind of financial assistance from UKA rather than UK Sport. Realise that there are a handful of distance runners in the UK at the moment who are receiving some kind of 'pocket money' (not sure of who these are) but surely something can be done to help those who are performing well domestically and on the fringes of running well Internationally for example athletes such as McCormick, Robinson etc?
Last year there were 6 long dist bods who got a £3k non-Lottery support package from UKA - the names and amounts were shown on UKA website so no secret - Dan R was one, Chris Davies, I think Yelling x 2. I'm sure most endurance folk would agree with your view here.
When you get in the realms of sums like £3k or so, which is enough to make a difference if used sensibly, i think it sometimes comes down to issues like athletes' own salaries/job structures, and those of their partners or parents, rather than just whether UKA can offer them financial support. That's Equality UK 2007 for you.
hows this for manning up: sitting at a computer and critisizing the decisions that others make in the heat of the moment and under great stress. what's more you have the anonymity of a silly discussion board. Which may i point out connor does not. why don't you keep your self riteous opinions to yourself.

what is it with you people: football, youth, hooch(whatever that is?) and the underclasses. is it just me or does running still have the snooty and middleclass undertones of old? perhaps this suppression of real passion is why britain is still underachieving in almost every department of the sport.

If that happened in Spain the bloke would be simply banned for life.
60 million misguided idiots who think that money, hooch and violence are the only solutions to any problem.Britain is a decadent nation that doesn't rank much above Pakistan and
