Cliffsnotes:I'm a slow runner looking to lower his 5k time to somewhere in the 17:00-17:30 minute range for a race on December 23rd. I need to develop a workout plan to achieve this. I'm at a level of low-moderate fitness right now (30 minute runs 5-7 times a week at around 7:00 pace for the past month and a half or so). My previous 5k PR was 18:45, set five years ago at age 16, so I've got some work to do.
The full version: Inspired by the recent trials and tribulations of Letsrun phenom Geoffery, I too have decided to call upon this community to assist me in the pursuit of a PR at an upcoming race. Like Geoffery, I am not a troll (although I will admit ocassionally trolling Letsrun is a guilty pleasure of mine), and I am also using my real name (Peter is registered so I've added a period). The similarities end there. I have nowhere near as much skill (real OR imagined) as Geoffery did. Simply put, I suck at running. Also, the primary focus of running a PR is to impress a girl.
Running purists can crinkle their noses at me saying that my intentions aren't pure, and that's fine, but some of us are more shallow and draw on other sources (pride and vanity in my case) for our motivations. Either way, I have absolutely unwavering discipline when it comes these things and I will have no problem sticking to whatever kind of insane workout and dietary schedule you Letsrun gurus come up with. I just need some advice.
Why is this girl so special? We graduated from High School four years ago - she was in a steady relationship with another guy the entire time, and I was always waiting for them to break up while enjoying relatively unsuccessful relationships of my own. Fast forward to today, we're both about to graduate from our respective colleges, and there's a good chance we'll be moving to our hometowns - she wants to become a teacher, I've been offered a nice job at a consulting firm I've been interning at for the past two years. We didn't talk much after High School, but we ran into each other last summer and began e-mailing each other daily, and now that's turned into a weekly phone call ritual. She hasn't dated anyone since she broke up with that same boyfriend 2 years ago, so I'm pretty sure she's not on the rebound, and I think she might be interested in me.
Anyway, here's the catch: she's a strong runner (#1 on a respectable D3 ladies squad), and I'm not. Our high school puts on an Annual fundraiser/5k every year. I really think it would "Wow" her significantly if I was able to perform decently in this race for once (for comparison's sake, I usually run this thing in around 19:xx, with about two weeks of training beforehand.) I don't need to do anything crazy, but something in the mid-low 17s would be great.
So, if you stuck with me this far - thanks! And, what should I do? I have plenty of time and energy to devote to this quest - if that means running doubles, I'm fine with it. As I've said above I've been on a steady diet of around 25-30 miles a week for the past two months, so I'm not out of shape, but I'm not in it. If anyone has any fitness indicator workouts that I could do sometime in the near future, that would be awesome. Also I should note that historically I've been much better at the mid distances (800/1500), and I think I'm aerobically underdeveloped.
And, when this is all finished, regardless of my time - as a reward I will post pictures of myself and the girl at the race (provided I get her permission, but she's the kind who will get a kick out of something like this).
