Going to see some old friends this weekend. Have Noah Kahan tix in July. Still going to train for a Spring 2025 marathon. No changes for me.
In all honesty, I don't get the preppers. They put a lot of money and labor into surviving a nuclear/biological/chemical holocaust without regard to the fact that the planet would be an unlivable wasteland for centuries. I guess being one of the last humans to die of starvation in a small backyard bunker is some sort of victory? Enjoy those freeze dried meals and drinking recycled urine!

I'd like to build a bunker/bomb shelter once I have the resources. Currently, my plan is to get to southern Argentina if it looks like things will pop off. I expect that will be far enough from the action.
If they lose their minds and drop the big nukes, your $1,000 worth of rice and 9mm ammo won't mean much. If you can't breath the air and everyone has radiation sickness, then you are a goner either way.
But if it continues to be simmering/serious regional "stress" around the world and small wars among proxies (like in Yemen or Taiwan), then you won't need to buy sandbags for your house in Ohio. The Yemeni aren't coming to take your truck, you'll be fine.
An attack by one major nation on another would destabilize everyone's economy, fuel supply, food supply, etc. There is no global player who wants that. Somebody like ISIS might want that, but they are 5,000 angry guys living in Western Iraq, so they don't really call the shots.
p.s. Pepe, how would you get to Southern Argentina in the case of a global shutdown?

At times, the human population has dropped between 1,000 and 10,000 (after the Toba supervolcano eruption), and we still bounced back.
p.s. Pepe, how would you get to Southern Argentina in the case of a global shutdown?
I'd do it when I felt things were about to get bad, but before things actually shut down. Obviously it would be better to have a more guaranteed out, but that's my current best option.

If there Democrats are going to get USA/NATO/EU nuked into nothing, there's nothing we can do about it in the short term. Anyone who doesn't fancy living in a Mad Max movie should just bash the Evil Democrats online every chance they get and resist all their evil policies. If the Democrats are for it (post-2014 Kiev Nazi coup Ukraine, "moderate Muslim freedom fighters"), you need to be against, if Democrats are against it (Russia/Putin, Syria/Assad, etc), then you need to be for it.

Why long grain rice specifically? Why not short grain or farro?
why canned beans and not dried? If you have the ability to cook rice, you can cook beans.

Yes, exactly this. I'd want to be among the first to go. OP, if you've never read The Road by Cormack McCarthy, look it up. That's the world you'd be living in. (I hated that book, btw.) I have no interest in any of that.
Here's the key point, for me at least: In a Doomsday scenario, there would be no light at the end of the tunnel. Even in, say Ukraine, I could envision a point 5 years in the future where there would be no war. Or escaping to another country. Or defeating the Russians. In a WW3 scenario with nukes flying to and fro? It's game over, man. It's game over. If you don't die in the blast, the radiation will get you. Or starvation. Or your fellow preppers. Or maybe it'll be the boredom of sitting in your bunker, filled with existential dread. At that point, you'll need only one bullet. Three guesses who it'll be for.
Interesting to see this thread after watching The Road last night (h/t to the other commenter above who mentioned the book, which is surely better than the movie). I was thinking about how I don't think I'd want to live in that world. It just made me so tired to think about the anxiety of it all...
