my roomate/teammate does atleats 500 pushups every morning and night, seven days a week. I was wondering if he is seriouslly over doing it by the amount he is doing and not really ever resting?

"To each his own."
Is there an end to his means? Athlete? Mountain climber? Ego?
he wants to be alan webbs hero.
Sounds like he needs to start having more sex. In Catholic school we used to call that sublimation.
he should taper for a few days and then do a 1000
If he does that many it sounds like he does the half-assed type of push-ups where he goes up and down really quick barely fractions of an inch. No way this guy is doing full military style push-ups. I've never heard of someone whether it be Div. I wrestlers, pro boxers, or navy seals doing that many REAL push-ups every day.
yeah right buddy wrote:

Agreed, it's all about technique. It's better to do them slowly, feel the resistance and do them right rather than worry about the amount. It's the same as sit-ups. Too many want to brag about how many a day they do when they should worry more about the end result. You gotta feel that burn.
I worked with a huge guy this summer who did upwards of 1000 (real) pushups a day, just during pauses at work. He was a bodybuilder and had arthritis in his shoulders, probably from doing so many pushups.
It's doable, but crazy.
Agreed 100%. A good exercise is to have a spotter put their fist on the floor below your chest. When doing your sets of push-ups be sure to lower all the way down and touch the top of his/her fist and extend all the way up almost to the point of locking out. That is a full push-up and not too many people can do 1000 a day. If you don't have a spotter use something the size of a fist like an apple.
Proper form is CRITICAL, more so as you get older. I was aggravating my back by doing the Navy SEALS pushups routine.
I have dropped back to doing 1-2 minute 'hold in the mid-up position' as an alternative & will add time as I get more used to it.
It's better than nothing. Believe me you younger guys and gals, you will find that getting older is NOT fun.
yeah he definitely doesnt do perfect pushups but there decent.
Is he very muscular?
For most people, pushups is a muscular endurance exercise. You don't need to be "muscular" to do a lot of pushups.
