It is true. Very, very sad.

Im depressed! Somebody tell me something funny about Ryan or something he did to make you laugh.
Casey,
Is this you?
Ryan was a great guy. I loved him as a person. I don't know how anyone will deal with this.
You wanna hear something funny? You were there that night when those chicks asked Watson "Where's the party", right? That's the funniest thing I can think of now. Feel free to-email me. Your bro was a great guy.
Ay...
In Ethiopia we say ... the price the living pay for precious life is to hear tragic news...
This young man died doing what he loved...
This is very tough..
Very SAD!
right now, i am nothing but a 20 year old guy posting on a message board. i did not know ryan or his family. but i was shocked to hear of this, i truly felt like crying. i will be praying for the shay family. may God rest his soul.

I agree. Ryan's death only makes me want to run more.
Yeah this is Case (not casey, I hate that spelling)
Yeah dude I remember that....Watson was running around saying, " In your_ _ _ _ _!!! If you got one!!!"
Those were the good old days.
I gotta give a shout out to the ND boys who ran with Ryan. You guys really helped make him a stronger person.
case--are you in the U.S. now? last time i talked to you you were teaching in Korea, right?
I remember the time when Ryan and I went off-roading across St. Mary's property in my Chevy S-10 (or Trucky-Trucky as we liked to call it) and I got permanently kicked off campus.
Yeah Im still in Korea "teaching English".
I'm coming back to the States within the next 24 hours.
good. have a safe trip back.
i can't think of many funny stories that would be appropriate at the moment, but one thing that keeps coming to mind is the weekly monday west side pound fest. i mean, not that we saw much of ryan after the first 60 seconds of the run, but that was pretty typical...
I'm praying for the Shay family while they deal with this tragedy.
As soon as anyone knows where/how to send notes of support, gifts, and other such things, please make this knowledge available.
Anyone who is racing tommorrow may find it difficult, but going as hard as you can may be the best way to honor the man. I hope the NYRRC can come up with 39,000 black armbands or ribbons on short notice.
Why do we feellove, when in the end, somebody gets hurt?
How can I appreciate my life knowing that my little brother is gone and he's no longer here to share it with.
that would be a great thing to do jsquire
Oh my God. This is terrible.

Just try to have faith that your brother is in a better place and he's waiting there for you. We're all going home someday and you will see your brother again.
you stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid human!!!!!
I seriuosly doubt PEDs. I know that they litter the upper ranks of athletics, but if I recall correctly Shay (and Alicia) are pretty devoted Christians. I'm not suggesting that this autmoatically disqualifies them from scrutiny, I just feel that it lends bit of substance to their defense.
I did notice this quote from Meb in the NYT article on the marathon and Shay's death:
“I thought today would be his day,” said Meb Keflizighi, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist who finished eighth. “He had trained very, very hard to make a breakthrough. He’d lost a lot of weight, and was ready to go. I really thought that today he was going to have a breakthrough because he likes it when it’s windy, cool.”
A "lot of weight"? First thing this reminded me of was Ritz commenting on his collapse at the USA Championships 10k where he noted that he had been trying to lose weight leading up to the competition.
Hey Case. This is Brian Holinka. Not sure if you remember me from ND but I ran with Ryan for two years.
Your brother was the living embodiment of singular purpose and focus manifesting success. I have never met anyone with so much determination or anyone with such a love for running. I am heartbroken for you and your family. This is not fair.
