Hey lay off the high school kid, speaking as someone who has had a coach that didn't really care about his team, it does make a world of difference when you have someone who is emotionally involved in your training/racing.
Obviously someone who simply declares that you'll run a 13:30 5k with no reason or method of getting there is full of shit, but trust me it makes a big difference to have someone who wants you to do well as much as you do. I think a good coach will have reasonable goals and a vision for what his athletes can accomplish, along with a plan of how to do it. Especially after you're past the recruiting process and actually at the school, having a dedicated coach who will take an interest can make or break your college experience, especially before you have the knowledge and experience to be more independent and take complete control of your own training.
Chock lived with AlSal for a while. Then when she didn't produce he kicked her to the curb, just like he did with some others. He said they needed to "get them while their young". Trouble is, if they don't run fast enough they are thrown out like trash. Take notice.
