.....excuses....i made a mistake tactically that didn't allow me to as i say 'be there'.....nothing more...nothing less...
....for various reason i didn't run as aggressively as i needed to the last 500-600m (althouhg after i got gapped at around 5km i was honestly just happy to be in the race when things got going), and even if i did make the right decison (i didn't) in the end one takes all those factors, guts, talent, fitness, intelligence, etc... and factors them in to understand why u may or may not end up in certain positions (sometiems u just beat by a better physical talent...sometimes u get beat by better mental talent, etc...)....end of story...but to leanr and improve u must analyse why u do things and then hopefully fix those things...if u don't then we aas the say going to repeat history....not saying it would have altered things......but if u were at the race u would know what i am getting at.....even steve wondered what the hell i was doing at 500m to go when i 'ran like a putz' and chicekned out rather and listened to a spectator rather than go by my gut instinct....
....and the 'old guy' is really pretty good.....besides i am not much younger than that 'old guy'.....
supposedly the course was measured at 9688m. so add a minute or so to the top guys and you've got a 10k time. pretty solid, and to whoever said 'look who he's running against'. he's running against a 216 marathoner and a 1350 5k runner, not world class, but no slouches either.
He is a good runner, most Triathletes are not.
As stated before swimmers have quite an advatage. take the top 50 pros most have swimming backgrounds, not all most.
In the Olympics with drafting on the bike you can never make up the deficit. It does not take much effort to sit in a pack of 10 riders and click off a 28mph bike leg, you pull through once a minute and sit in the draft the rest of the time. To catch that group on your own you are gonna be close to your AT. They get off the bike fresh and you try to run with legs that have hammered for an hour.
You don't need to be a great runner in that scenario.
I'd say 15% of Pro Triathletes are good runners, and Simon is among the best of those, but that leaves a great majority who are simply not that great.
ironically i grew up swimming competitvely before running and i know a thing or two about the physiological training differences between elite training in swimming and running.... i've taken a course or two on the subject.

Hunter Kemper is another. Ran 28:xx? at Wake Forest, has become very succesful at tris....
no hunter barely broke 30 flat at wake forest and was a swimmer in high school, not a pure runner.
example of pure runners include brad K, Chris M (macca), greg W, the latter two ran for Oz as juniors.
thank you for correcting that moron. Hunter Kemper running 28:xx at wake almost made me fall out of my chair laughing. I'm not sure he was even all-acc in XC.
Greg W was a true, stud runner! NCAA champion, 4th at Oly trials. He got bored and wanted to stay in shape so he tried tri's... Grote did the same thing. They would never call themselves triathletes.
20 out of the 66 finishers at the Ironman in Hawaii ran <3hrs OFF the bike in 90F+ heat. That's 1/3 of the field - but I guess these guys aren't 'good' runners by your definition?
Colin Sahlman runs 1:45 and Nico Young runs 1:47 in the 800m tonight at the Desert Heat Classic
