Russell Brown, 5th-year Senior at Stanford, ran 3rd at Pac-10s today in 23:08.7 on an 8k course measured 15 meters long. He beat Nef Arai and Hari Mix, both sub-29 10k tracksters. Brown was only 10 seconds behind Galen Rupp . . we all know who he is.
Brown was a 1:50.1+/800m guy out of high school in spring 2003. As I recall, he was also a 4:15 miler and state xc champ in his division in New Hampshire (?), but was something like 85th at FootLocker NE Regionals.
This past summer, Brown ran 1:47.9+/800m following his 3rd place 3:37.+ at NCAAs. He is also right around 8-flat/3k indoors.
He was recruited to Stanford by Vin Lannana, then coached first by Andy Girard and now Pete Tegan. All very good coaches, but this guy could be coached by a mule and still do what he does.
Only thing missing from his college resume is a 10k, track or xc. That, we will find out in two weeks.
