I teach math at a public high school, but I'm looking for other career options. I have a masters in education and I'm considering going back to school and getting a masters in math, statistics, or economics.
Is anyone here a community college prof? Do I need a doctorate to teach math or education at a 2-year college?
Does anyone here teach GED prep or any other kind of adult education courses?
What is the pay like? What are the hours and stress in these fields?
I taught part-time for a community college in California, and I just have an MA (English Education). Most community colleges do NOT require a doctorate to teach there.
I also have taught GED prep and adult education courses. I did this from 1993-1995 while living in Michigan. It was for a non-profit organization and I made $21,500 salary during that time with a 10% bonus at the end of each year, so really $23,650. I was offered the job of director in 1995 for basically double my salary, but my wife finally finished graduate school and we were headed to Washington DC for jobs there, so I had to turn the job down. I'm sure you'd make a bit more now, but I don't think anyone ever got rich teaching GED prep and adult education classes.
I found the stress to be mimimal at both jobs. The only stress with a non-profit is wondering if you will continue to receive funding from year to year. At community colleges, the stress to publish is MUCH less than at a 4-year school, so that's nice, but you do get kids who have no business being in college at all, and that's disappointing if you have it in your head that all will succeed. Sorry my info isn't more up-to-date, but that's what I know.
