What do you think? Appropriate or not?
What do you think? Appropriate or not?
yes, but not until after your body has adjusted to the high mileage.
Ok.
I am near my peak mileage, but will not hit it probably for a couple more months. I have adjusted to my current level (high 80's) nicely.
Do I have the green light to start adding in a tempo, say, once a week?
I'm the only fat bastard so what gives?????
Hahaha......
Please anyone reply. Just looking for educated answers from those who may have done this sort of thing before.
You hear so much talk about tempo runs, but seems like no one ever talks about whether it is beneficial to do them during the base phase.
How does a fat bastard run anyways?
base phase, as i understand it, exists to get miles in. if you feel like picking it up one day, do so. if you pick it up enough you may consider it a "tempo run," but i'm not sure what would be accomplished by doing this, perhaps just some reassurance. if you are a little wiped out the next day just take it easy. i wouldn't suggest doing tempo runs at predetermined paces in stress-creating sites, like a track for example.
Fat Bastards run very slowly, that's how!
I like to throw in tempo surges like in a fartlek because for me to run the same pace for hours upon hours just puts me to sleep. It depends upon what works for you...if you get better results by doing copious mileage then do that. Personally I like a couple of days of tempo/IV/fartlek to get stronger. High mileage has never worked for me (100mi/wk) I just get more fatigued and race poorly.
FYI.. I consider my ideal race weight to be 155lbs...I am currently 170lbs with 6% fat so you tell me is that fat or what?
During your base phase your tempo run shouldn't hinder you to run the next day or you would defewat the purpose of a base phase...
Just an observation from someone that has never run a thon and only managed to run 34+ mins for a 10k.
So take it for what it's worth.
Run your base as you feel for that day. Just don't go all out. If you feel good one day and want to run harder than usual, go for it. If you feel a little tired the next day, good. You should. Just adjust accordingly.
Hey you're the one who called yourself fat...6% is definitely not fat though.
My goal with adding in a tempo run once a week during base phase is just to keep myself used to moving somewhat fast once in a while since the majority of my miles are at a relatively slow pace. My rationale is that it seems okay to devote 3-4 miles to a tempo run once a week, b/c if you are doing 100 mile weeks, the majority of that is still gonna be at a easy pace. I do tons of hilly runs during my base phase which I suspect approximate tempo effort fairly well, even though the pace is somewhat slower. Those hilly runs seem to work great at building up strength and I don't see how a relaxed tempo once a week could hurt the goal of building miles that much.

Just a tiny bit fat... not too bad. You must be kind of tall, like 6'2"-6'3"?
5'11" but I find if I get any smaller that 155lbs I get sicker easier...I know it's weird but it happens. Could have something to do with the fact that when I get down to 140lbs I have trainid like a mad man so that's the thing that breaks me down...
155 is ideal for me but I'm a ways from that right now
Yes, I would like to change my earlier "tiny bit" to "kinda, but not way too". (smile)
1. I'm not another "fat" bastard, I'm "fast" bastard. see the difference?
2. yup, if you're feeling good at 80mpw then go ahead and roll some tempos.
I am surprised that KNOWER hasn't responded to this....he knows everything, you know?
I was beginning to have an identity crisis
Which one of you Bastard bros. lives in the neighborhood that has the trail that ends at the white-bikini-woman's house? You didn't end up with the clap, right?
Base building phase....should build base. How about this recipe: if you feel bad, run slow; if you feel good, run fast; if you feel really good, run really fast; but never run 2 really fast days in a row; and always run fairly long.
Do that for 12-16 weeks, and your base has been built.
Always. Especially during a base phase, you're always developing your lactate threshold and touching on VO2Max systems. How else do you improve them if you don't work on them?
It is complete crap that you need to do months of 'base training'. There is always room for doing some tempo runs and intervals workouts during any phase of training. It will make you fitter and more able to handle the increase in mileage. There is really no point in just increasing your ability to run at relatively comfortable pace all the time. Unless, maybe, you're training for ultra, ultra marathons. In which case you have other problems!!!
