TITLE: I Drink Alone
Heh, back in high school 23 years ago some friends and I drove a couple hours downstate to the Illinois state fair to see Thorogood perform this & other ditties. We assuredly weren't drinking alone.
Weirdest thing. The porta-potty lines were ridiculous so many dudes went to piss under the bleachers. Some guy relieving himself next to me looks over and declares "hey, you're !" He was nobody I recognized, not from my school, no freaking idea how this random guy identified me. Which was a little disconcerting to process with my dongle hanging out and all. Remains a mystery to this day.
The other funny thing was, we'd tried to see ol' George the day before in Chicago but turned out we had the wrong date. The crowd in the parking lot looked all wrong for Thorogood, so while walking from the car to the venue we asked someone to make sure.
"George Thorogood? You're joking?"
"No, man, that's who we're here to see. He's playing tonight, right?"
"No, he was last night. Tonight's Amy Grant."
No wonder mine was the only beat-to-shit brown 1973 Buick Century with orange shag carpeting in the shelf under the rear window and handcuffs dangling from the rear view mirror. Those were the days.
