So I'm thinking about moving there and working at the Mayo Clinic. From what I've heard it's a nice town. Anyone on here know a bit more?

Its a great little city....not a ton to do though and is pretty conservative. There are good running routes though especially through downtown along the river. Mike Torchia is from there, so it can't be all bad.
No. It's not. It's small in population but really sprawled out. The downtown area near the clinic is fairly attractive, but the rest of the city is not that nice in my opinion.
If you're looking for a city about that size in that region, think about Duluth, MN or LaCrosse, WI instead. If you don't mind a town that's a little bit bigger without being too big, Madison is a great place to be.
As stated, Rochester is a very very conservative place. If you have a family and are a mostly mainstream type of person you'll fit right in. If you dont have a family or arent very conservative yourself, i think you will struggle to find things to do. Very little personality to the town itself.
Now if you are thinking you will need lots of medical help in the near future its a great place to be.
P.S. ive lived here for 23 years (nearly my entire life), and what keeps me? School for about 2.5 more years.
only move there if you're:
(a) very dedicated to your profession in the medical field and are willing to give up your social life to work at a great clinic, or
(b) already married with kids so you have no social life
honestly, it's boring place. But it's a good place to raise a family, I think. If you're not still looking to get out to bars, clubs, lots of arts events, etc...you'll be fine.
I moved to Roch about 3 years ago. The population is going to hit 100K people this year plus all the surrounding cities and country side add more. It is the fastest growing area of the state. That being said, if your looking for bar scene and or a big night life, this is not the place. Its a great family town that is big enough and has a small town feel. There alot of cool resturants and bars but everything is spread out. As far as stores they have about 2 of everything. It is a good town for running, lots of parks outside of town and hills around. From downtown mpls to downtown rochester it is only 1 hr 20 min. There are a few good runners in town which most run for clubs in the cities. Hope that helps. Good luck.

I have been to Rochester a few times and definitely agree with everyone here that there is not much to do. Obviously working at the Mayo Clinic would lead you to bigger and better things down the road, but in terms of a lot to do, much culture and great running, Rochester is lacking.
I was raised in Rochester and had it as my permanent address until earlier this year when I moved away for grad school. It's not that bad a place. Wonderful running town with trails galore (and hills, glorious hills). It is, however, pretty dang lifeless. So as the others have stated, unless you will be married to your job (which is likely to happen at Mayo) or are already married or have taken a vow of perpetual singleness, it's not a great ton for younger people.
My spouse and I turned down jobs at Mayo - primarily because of all the things discussed here. We might be a little older than you (most likely, actually as we are more mid-way through our career). In the end, we decided that the Mayo would be a "nice place to be from" - but at our age we were looking to go to the place we would rather be ...
That said, before this job we both had spent 10 years in places that were "good to be from" and it help us land good jobs. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for better things down the road. The Mayo clinic is a great place and the opportunities they give are hard to beat. Rochester is a tough sell if you are not from MN.
it's a wonderful place. if you love the outdoors, this might be your nirvana. however, the snow line continues to go a bit further north, so you might need to travel a bit if you are a xc skier. there is little crime, save for one particular small area. you will find that the scandinavian influence in minnesota really does create a wonderful atmosphere. housing is cheap, but good quality. hunting and fishing is amazing. the "big city" is 90 miles straight shot. i must warn you that it can get extremely cold....however, there are tunnels that can enable you to stay out of the weather the majority of the time in the mayo area to the mall, etc....good luck!
Well my background is immunology/molecular biology, I'm already married, don't party or do the bar thing, and like the conservative-type towns. Plus, I'm living in a rat hole town in Iowa right now so anywhere seems like a step up. Thanks for the input.
The town itself, is it well taken care of?
The town of Rochester is well taken care of. It helps to have a huge population of medical professionals. The Rochester Track Club hosts quite a few nice races. I've never lived there but I've visited there often.
you will love it then. if you are in iowa, you already know a bit about bad winters. i hope you are a hockey fan as well!
Has Jack Rabbit ever spent time in SD? If you liked SD and iowa, then Rochester will surpass your expectations.
This guy lives there.
That guy is a stud.

But Roch is a dump.

Get a 20 gauge and a Brittany spaniel. Nearby Whitewater Wildlife Management Area has great ruffed grouse and woodcock hunting. Decent trout fishing is nearby as well.
