The only race I run that costs more than $5 is a charity event so I'm not opposed to shilling out $25 for it.

Traffic control (local Sheriff, local public works dept, etc.)
Insurance
Port-o-lets
Announcers
Race timing
Race management
Course measurement
Course Marshals
Aid along course,
Food and drink for after the race
the list goes on.
Have some respect for the race directors. It is not as easy as you may think.
Yep, and lots of expensive stuff goes into cars, too. That doesn't mean I'm going to pay $50K for a Cadillac...I'll stick with my $15K Chevy. I have the same mentality with races.
