Certainly there's a great deal of money and media interest being funneled to the "ACTIVITY" of running - major urban marathons, local road races and festival events. It's about time all of you whining, woke up and realized the "SPORT" of running - Road Racing, Track and Field, Cross Country, etc. - is dying a fast death.
There are myriad reasons:
- better planning and marketing by other sports (NASCAR, NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, WNBA) - Craig Masback may be a book-smart genius (Princeton, Oxford, etc.), but he does not have the hardened street-smarts to take all of the disciplines of the "SPORT" of running to a higher level. Several years ago, US Soccer developed a long-range (ten to twenty year) plan with the ultimate goal of wiing the World Cup. this plan encompasses youth development, to scholastic, to professional levels. Where's USATF's plan? Other than riding on the shoulders of US Sprinters and/or paying tribute to a bunch of NCAA Good Old Boys (see next), what can even the most interested expect from the leadership? Maybe it's time for new leaders.
- good old boy network still in control - how the hell can an idiot from Washington State University like John Chaplin still be in control of USATF (and its high performance development dollars)? Chaplin never developed any U.S. athletes while coaching at WSU. Rather, he made his name by recruiting a string of foreign talent. He has surrounded himself with a network of his like-minded pals. Most of the NCAA coaches are just high school coaches operating at the next level. Even the "smartest" of them would rather be an AD at a Division III college.
- agents, who would otherwise be unemployed, needing to pay their rent by taking advantage of the unsuspecting. Be it Jos Hermans, Ray Flynn, the late Kim McDonald, Dr. Rosa et al., to the regional agent wanna-be; most of these guys couldn't hold a job elsewhere. By taking their 10 to 30%, they're milking the "SPORT" of its lifeblood - money, while at the same time tarnishing the "SPORT" by extorting uninformed/spineless road race directors into taking a bus load of Kenyans.
- holier than thou attitudes of one discipline over another (i.e., track vs. roads, major urban marathons vs. trumped-up IAAF or USATF "Championships"). They are all disciplines within the "SPORT". When those passionate out the "SPORT" can't get along, how is the media and the general public supposed to get excited?
- uninformed/spineless road race directors - most of these are nice people excited about their little road race. In that excitement, they have a hard time saying "no" to the regional agent wanna-be's who offer a laundry list of "B" or "C" level East Africans.
Rather than divide and conquer, it's time to unit the "SPORT" - track AND roads AND cross-country before it's too late. Start by directing your words and energy to Indianapolis and the USATF Office. To borrow that great line from the movie "Network", "I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!"
