His point was obviously that there was no pressure on Powell in a heat.
no, malmo, remember that world records don't count if they're not run in the right race.

Yep.
I can't get too excited about this for several reasons.
First, about half the 100 WR setters in the last 20-30 years have had lost their records or been banned later for drug positives (Ben Johnson, Tim Montgomery, Justin Gatlin, etc), and that doesn't even include those that slip the test. This isn't just limited to the 100 or sprints for me; WRs in general hold much less interest for me than used to. To each his own.
Second, I'm normally less excited about a record by an athlete that has shown they can run fast but can't compete.
These days, head-to-head competition just means a lot more to me than records.

But Powell did compete at the WC, he got the bronze.

You just love be the contrarian. Powell sucks when gold medals are on the line. He does poorly compared to his ability and has been that way since he came on the scene. He was the favorite going into the Olympic final and then didn't even medal. He didn't even run in the '05 championships, saving himself from having to explain another failure. This year he gets bronze in one of the weaker WCs for 100m depth.
The guy, drugs or not, is the fastest 100m ever and has run under 9.80, what, a half dozen times? Yet he chokes when it matters.
