Pretty good interview, though I think he's overly down on himself for his highschool times. He dramatically improved on 3000 and up but his mile times are close.
i have heard from numerous sources that arkansas does a very chill summer training program. i have heard of mielage only in the 50's -60's. craig's comment about everybody returning fresh and ready to start training might suggest this to be true. anybody with any knowledge about their mileage in june and july? i had a teammate transfer their after graduating (he had an outdoor season left) and was told to do 50 all summer, but maybe that does not apply to the xc guys.
Every runner is a bit different. That is the down time for the guys, so they tend to take a couple weeks off after outdoor NCAAs and come back "ready to get in shape." Ryan Wilson used to only run about 30 miles a week in the summer, while others got up to around 55-60. Summer is a hard time to run, and Coach Mac respects the fact that these guys are training and racing hard 8-9 months out of the year. Usually the first XC workout is not done until mid October (just solid distance runs up until then).
thanks... i guess that explains the traditional slow starts and incredible finishes. they seem to be the most consistent when it matters... in november.
given the differences of training between arkansas and mcardle... do you think tom would have been as successful at ark. i do, but how would you account for the lack of summer volume not making a significant difference.
I think the best part about Arkansas' program is while they do focus on winning the NCAA title, McDonnell has them training basically through it and keep training hard through track, peaking at NCAA track. I think this is very impressive and very smart. He doesnt focus so much training on doing great in cross it seems.
could you be more specific in regards to workouts in the fall
They don't work out. They just drink beer and visualize running. That is the secret. No running; just mentally masturbating.
