I would like to get access to good sporting events, track and other. I have a professional camera and have written for a magazine once but am not employed by any media organization. How can I get press credentials? Can I create my own media outlet (website?) and do so? I just would like better access to events to take good photos for fun.

Keep asking questions. Start with H.S., jr college, small college. Take journalism, video, photo classes. Get your articles and pictures published anywhere you can. Work hard, but establish a rock solid reputation for integrity and honesty. Work at it for decades and you will someday get into the NCAAs, USATFs, IAAF World Cross, IAAF Outdoors, IAAF Indoors, etc. It worked for me.
Thanks for the tips. I already have a career (not related to media, but somewhat related to sports) and am doing this more as a hobby. I have written one magazine article and have the photo credits for it as well and have taken hobbyist photos for a website. Since I do not plan on being on a payroll for a magazine or newspaper I know I cannot get press credentials that way, but would like to progress in the area. Any more advice is appreciated.
The majority of the U.S. press creds at the Osaka worlds went to non-professional media. Some went to public relations people, not working in a journalistic capacity. Many of us are retired, or have real jobs that pay much better than communications or journalism.
