There's a question at the end of all this, so bear with me.
So I used to be a runner with a little bit of talent. Went about 4:10 mile, 8:15 3k in college.
Fast forward more than a decade later, and I've entered a 10k, pressured into it be friends. Haven't run seriously since college, haven't run consistently for a couple of years.
Been puttering around for the last three weeks or so and decided to see where I was today. 4x800, 2 minute rest. Humid conditions. Was between 2:55 and 3:00. Ran a couple 200s at the end in 32.
The race is in three weeks. My optimistic goal was 37 minutes or so, based on the idea that I normally get in shape pretty quick. In the past, I've gone from running 7:30 on 5 mile runs to about 6:15 in a matter of weeks.
But now I'm thinking that's a bit too optimistic. Maybe 40 minutes is more like it.
So the question to all you letsrun givers of advice is, What should I do in the next three weeks to get in shape fast? I'm not concerned about anything beyond the 10k coming up.
Suggest some workouts and frequency. What will give me the most bang for the buck? Strides? Intervals? Fartlek? Tempo? A combination of all of the above?
Granted, three weeks is a sliver of time to accomplish much. But I'm going to give it a go.
Snide, snotty, sadistic replies welcome so long as some of you give some legitimate advice.
