My vote would be for Reiko Tosa in the woman’s marathon.
All the female marathoners deserve an honourable mention.
They seem to have made a better fist of running in those conditions than the men.
For instance, our Tracy Morris incredibly ran a time not far off her PB.
I’ve only run a 10 miler in a 86degree heat - and that had me on my knees at the finish - I’m in awe at their sheer bloody guts and willpower.
But it was the agonised distress of poor Tosa’s face as she was dropped by Ndereba and the two Chinese that made such riveting viewing.
She must have been aware that she alone was Japan’s last hope of a medal and was carrying the whole country’s expectations on her tiny shoulders.
With her flailing arms and legs, it seemed to take an enormous effort just to simply progress in a forward direction.
I was really pleased that she hung on in there and was rewarded with a place on the podium.
Bet she’s a national heroine now - but she deserves it.
