Webb had a fantastic year, better than anyone most in the country expected. He is now the fastest miler in American history, and he has four or five years of peak running ability left for the mile. Obviously the 8th place finish at World's is a letdown, but his tactics showed significant improvement and he was beaten by athletes of similar ability. While I am sure the man is heart broken, he has nothing to be ashamed of.
He set his 800m PR exactly one month ago. With the strength and speed he displayed in that race, I have no doubt he would have won todays WC 1500 Final if it were held right then and there. While I think he displayed great fitness in the 1500 final today, he was clearly not the same athlete as a month ago. I speculate that his season was too long and he could not hold at peak ability.
I think Razcko should make the simple adjustment of shifting his training one month forward for next year. With this adjustment, I would expect him to win Gold in Beijing. Regardless, I think Razcko has proven his abilities as a world class coach, and with him coaching one of the best middle distance runners in world history, we are going to see some amazing feats next year and beyond.
