"He's good,'' Lagat said. "He's strong. I'm proud of Alan. He's going to be one of the best American athletes.''
But Webb didn't feel like one of the best in his semifinal race. He was frustrated by having to work so hard to get into the finals. He had to fight and maneuver past other runners as he made his way up from last with a lap to go.
It wasn't exactly the perfect race strategy.
"I wasn't aggressive enough,'' he said. "It almost cost me a spot in the finals. That's why you don't do that.''
Lagat had a fearful look on his face as he watched Webb sprint toward the finish line. Lagat was trying to motion him forward with body language.
"We're going to have a talk about that,'' Lagat said with a smile. "I was so nervous. I wanted Alan in the finals, I wanted Alan to win a medal. Gold, silver, bronze, I want Alan to be on the podium, the same thing I want for me.''
