about 3 days ago, and I haven't heard back. I know that they're very busy at this time of the season, so i was just wondering how long i should wait until i try again if i don't get a response.

get used to it. coaches in general are very slow to respond to e-mails, especially from recruits. the coach will respond when he/she decides to spend some time on recruiting. it could be a day, it could be a month. i wouldn't follow up unless you are planning to visit in the next few days. if you don't hear from the coach in 3 or 4 weeks, then you might try calling. if that doesn't work, then it's time to move on.
Could be the coach is busy, or could be the coach forgot, or could be the coach has character issues. But it's funny, I emailed Gags who coaches the Nike Oregon Team, someone who has been coaching for decades. I had met him only once, and not only did he email me the next day, but he told me to send him my phone number and then he called me two days later. And this was in early August. I have only met him once, and I coach a small high school xc team. On the other hand, I have emailed small college or large high school coaches and some of them have never emailed back. It's all in the character of the person coaching. Gags treats everyone with respect. If I ever make it big coaching somewhere, I hope I remember to treat people that way.
some coaches just don't do email. try a phone call and then try a different coach

see if there is an assistant coach with an email. they will be spending more time on recruiting than the head coach.
For teams that are competing Labor Day weekend, this was the first week that official practice could begin. Lots of teams go away to cross country camp - perhaps the coach you contacted was away at camp and couldn't check email?
Give it 7 days from your initial email and follow up with another and a phone call.
