I have only been passed on a solo training run once in my entire life. It was early morning, and I was in the first 10 minutes of my run, when I go VERY slow. A local middle aged jogger passed me.
But other than that, in 12 years of training, I have never been passed on a solo training run. Now, I have been passed in races countless times (including by Lauren Fleshman); I'm not trying to brag here.
I just think that it's because of the relative rarity of decent runners (decent as in ran in college or are currently training hard).
If you're cruising along in the 6:00 to 7:30 range, there's just not many people out there who are going to be going significantly faster at that particular time and place, to the point of making up lots of ground and passing you. Most people out jogging are just damn slow.
And I don't live in the boonies either; I live in a heavily populated area in CA and use popular trails.
Has anyone else experienced this?
side note: When the one old man did pass me, I had already realized several years earlier that I had never been passed. So the moment came as a shock. I am proud to say I did not start straining to hold him off; I just let it happen with humility and acceptance. Waves of peace washed over me.
