Does anyone have any knowledge of the walk-on policy at UW-Madison? Does Schumacher even allow walk-ons? If i ran sub-15 for 5k would i have a shot?

You stand a good chance of getting a trip to Eugene, OR this fall.
I had a friend a handful of years ago ask the coach about walking on and the coach basically told him he would have to run around 9:10 (3200) to walk on. I am sure that has changed since then, but I would imagine you have to run fairly fast in order to walk on. Seems like Schumacher usually takes a handful of guys who are good in high school, but not elite, and lets them compete for the team. Just email him and ask.
Wait patiently until UW finds Schumacher's replacement and then figure out what the policy is.
I've seen some guys that get to compete in some meets that have run around 14:40
well i'm going into my sophomore year of college and i feel like i could very possibly run under 14:40 this year for 5k...i know some coaches don't allow walk-ons, but i haven't heard anything about UW
They have walk-ons, but they're all recruited walk ons, essentially, nobody really shows up and asks if they can be on the team.
It wouldn't hurt to contact them and just see what the policy is and if he thinks you might fit into his program, maybe you'd have a shot... it never hurts to try.
They're transfer qualifying times are MUCH stiffer than HS qualifying times....

I've never really understood why they think transfers have to be faster than their HS qualifying times, a fast time is a fast time, right?
I would think a runner in college should be running faster times than a kid in high school. They probably figure it's more worth the coaching and time on a kid that's going to be there 4 years as opposed to 2-3 years. Especially a program like Wisconsin, they don't need transfers, unless they run 14:00!
bump
Is it fair to say if you receive NO athletic scholarship $$$ that you are (essentially) a walk-on.
just look at the team bios. A lot of the kids are good but by no means studs. It appears like a lot of you overestimate being on the team.

I ran my first few years at a similar D1 program, the coach would have about 4-5 scholarship athletes and 1, maybe 2 at the most RECRUITED walk-ons. It was against the rules to not allow a person the opportunity to walk-on, but he did everything he could for them not to get on the team. I was a recruited walk-on that ran 9:27 for 3200m in hs. But running for this coach turned out as being one of the biggest mistakes that I made. So another words, I'm sure Wisconsin gets the runners they want and don't need 20 walk-ons running along, thats DIII.
Wow, I though if I were to run DI for a great school I'd have to be a monster.
I mean 9:43 and 9:45?
I wonder what they really look for when they recruit. For all I know they could be like Andrew Dumm and be running those times off of 10 miles a week.
I really doubt a just sub 15 runner would get a second glance. Yes, they do take a chance at some slower high school runners, but they may have had some impressive cross achievements.
I'd say the cut-off would be closer to 14:30. And that's pushing it.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I heard that UW has like three levels of teams, A, B, C. The C guys would probably the the kids who run 4:20's, in high school.
If you ran sub 15 in high school, I can't see a single school in the country not let you walk on, unless they are just getting a monster class and the coach is a d-bag. It's too bad more coaches aren't smarter and let more guys walk on. You don't have to let them compete, but it doesn't cost the team much of anything to just let them practice and do workouts/time-trials, you never know even a 9:40 3200 runner in high school can turn into a stud in college.
But seriously, sub 15 and not even allowing this kid on the team?

I also marked the instate kids as wisconsin has a tradition of taking in state kids and giving them a chance.
If you look at it, they may have some times that are questionable, but they also have at least one event that they are pretty exceptional at. Also the instate kids, many come from smaller divisions where they DOMINATE but have no real competition, but since they're instate, they get more of a look from Jerry and its easier to tell if they'll fit in...
For walk-ons, they're pretty decent and after seeing what lacy did this year as a freshman, I think Jerry's pretty good at determining who's going to fit in and who isnt.
i'm from a neighboring state and they were going to let me walk-on with 49, 1:54, 4:22
OK, so we've come to the conclusion that they allow walk-ons! Great.
