It also struck me immediately that the bartender seen briefly at the joint where Prefontaine works looked an awful lot like Don Kardong.

And his girlfriend is also Patch Adams' girlfriend.
How does that happen?
The same girl goes for Pre and Robin Williams? Not believable.

These are the runners I recognized during that Munich scene:
Pat Porter, Steve Ave, Brad Hudson, Tom Ansberry,
plus I think I saw Jeff Atkinson sitting in the bar?
Anybody else notable?
I thought I spotted Kenny Moore in the party scene near the end of the movie.
yeah pat porter plays as lasse viren it actually took me a couple times watching the movie to realize it.

that was Kenny Moore which was ironic since it was Moore's house that Pre was leaving to drive down Skyline Blvd where he crashed. Wonder how Kenny felt about that

Not ironic, coincidental.

also, am I the only one who JUST noticed that frank shorter plays fred long in this movie?
I had noticed that. Frankly, if Frank had played himself -- just darkening his hair and adding the droopy mustache he had back in those days -- he would have done better than the guy who played him, who looked nothing like Frank in the early 70s, and didn't seem to be able to run (and certainly not with anything approaching Frank's characteristic style).
I thought that Crudup nailed Pre, and Pat was excellent as Viren.
All in all, considering that Pre was such an uninteresting person, I thought that it was an O.K. movie, better than its competitor released at about the same time.
the post race party was not at kenny's house. and so goes the mis information about prefontaine's life and who he was.
Actually there was a article about the two actors PR's when the movies came out. Crudup had the faster 400 & mile times in the training leading up to filming. And who wants to see a faux-documentary like Prefontaine was? Just watch Fire on the Track then. It's nice to see Hollywood try to make running cool.

...and Moore wasn't Pre's teammate. Kenny had graduated already when Pre was a frosh. The movie accurately depicts that. Overall, a great movie. Much better than Prefontaine, with its poor makeup and worse acting.
To whomever started this thread: Gimme a break. How many more times in your lifetime will you see two, not one, feature films about an American distance runner?
Answer: None.
We are fortunate that Pre was served by Moore and Robt Townshend in making Without Limits.
Dellinger and Bowerman and Pre. I know the question has been raised before, but can someone spell out clearly these relationships. "Without Limits" seems generally very close to reality in most cases except for its virtual dismissal of Dellinger's role as Pre's coach. Sure it works as drama better with Dellinger omitted, but that still seems unjust to Dellinger - and disappointing on the part of the Oregonians who played such major roles in making the film.
Hardly coincidental given that Moore was a contributor to the writing of the movie.

Atkinson
Robert Towne, not Townsend
Like a few who have already commented, I too have read Men of Oregon, and I noticed that facts that were presented by Moore himself seemed to be ignored in the movie.
The diving board bolt that was the cause of his injured foot (as mentioned), as well as the fact that when Pre was greeted by Dellinger and some Oregon squad members that (in the movie) Kenny Moore is one of them, even though Moore clearly states in his book that of the two men that showed up at Pre\'s door (sorry, can\'t remember both their names at this point- one was for sure Roscoe Divine, which was portrayed accurately in the movie) he wasn\'t one of them. Granted, they aren\'t horrible errors that result in us seeing Pre any differently for the most part, but with the screenplay being written by Moore, they are quite obvious and clearly, chosen mistakes. Especially with Moore bashing Disney\'s Prefontaine so outright, accusing them of not portraying who he was.
As well, just personal opinion here, but I think both Pre movies could have done a better job explaining why he started running, his progression though high school, etc. This stuff is common knowledge to a lot of people on here, but most of the audience wouldn\'t have known he discovered his talent in gym class, that he went undefeated his junior and senior years, etc. I would have much rather seen more of the movie dedicated to his progression to success, rather than what he did, and didn\'t achieve once he was in the limelight.

yes they would have....because, in the 60s, (how I was 'discovered, too); EVERY distance runner was discovered in the 'distance run' that was part of P.E. class in those days and usually plucked up for the X-C or track team. Our distance run was only a X-C mile around the grounds of the junior high, but it might as well have been 5 miles to a 9th grade kid.

he was leaving the party at Jeff Holister's house, (a Nike exec) and he was dropping off Shorter at Moore's house. He dropped Shorter off; sped off down the hill, around the turn and into the headlines, he next morning.

Hollister (not an exec) didn't live in Hendricks Park.

you don't think Pre was an interesting person? while I agree it's hard to argue that he isn't overhyped, I think he was very interesting--mainly perhaps because of his sheer bluntness/rebelliousness, in regards to the AAU, etc...
