Saw him live a couple days back. Pretty sick
that first violent femmes album.
Jimmy Buffett, for sure. As long as you tell your kids that Margaritaville's "frozen concoction" is ice cream and avoid "Why Don't We Get Drunk?," you're fine.
I've always been big on Gordon Lightfoot, too. Good driving music.
Cat Stevens, pre-religion change. Lyrical genius and fun to listen to.
Raffi, if your family is young and likes Bananaphones.
Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits is always a good one. Beatles 62-66 is a great suggestion from earlier, as is Shrek soundtrack. Abbey Road - who doesn't like singing along to Octopus' Garden or Maxwell's Silver Hammer?
My parents used to play a Fats Domino Greatest Hits tape in the car on trips... Blueberry Hill, Walkin' to New Orleans...
Taj Mahal has some good family-friendly stuff - Mo' Roots, for example, or Recycling The Blues & Other Related Stuff. Giant Step, too - how can you not sing along to Fishin' Blues?
Betcha goin' fishin' all of your time, baby's goin' fishing too
Bet your life, your sweet life, catch more fish than you
Many fish bites if ya got good bait
Here's a little tip I would like to relate
Big fish bites if ya got a good bait
I 'a goin' fishin'
Yes, I'm goin' fishin'
And my baby's goin' fishin' too
I went down to my favorite fishin' hole
Baby grabbed me a pole and line
Throw my pole on in
Caught a nine pound catfish
now I brought him on home for supper time
Big fish bites if ya got a good bait
I'a goin' fishin'
Yes, I'm goin' fishin'
And my baby's goin' fishin' too
Baby brother 'bout to run me outta my mind
Say can I go fishin' wit' you?
I took him on down to the fishin' hole
now what do you think he did do?
Pulled a great big fish outta the bottom of the pond
And he laughed and jumped 'cause he was real gone
Big fish bites if ya got a good bait
I'a goin' fishin'
Yes, I'm goin' fishin'
And my baby's goin' fishin' too
Put 'em in the pot baby, put 'em in the pan
Honey cook 'em till' they're nice and brown
Make a batch of buttermilk coal cakes mama
And you chew them things
And you chomp 'em on down
Big fish bites if ya got a good bait
I'a goin' fishin'
Yes, I'm goin' fishin'
And my baby's goin' fishin' too
Betcha goin' fishin' all of your time, baby's goin' fishing too
Bet your life, your sweet life, catch more fish than you
Many fish bites if ya got good bait
Here's a little tip I would like to relate
Big fish bites if ya got a good bait
I'm a-goin' fishin'
Yes, I'm goin' fishin'
And my baby's goin' fishin' too

I kid you not!
I winced when my wife suggested that " we play something for the children. "
By the end of the car journey ( 2 days ) I was singing along a the top of my voice like only an embarrassing dad can.
I think this version is recorded from the cast of the Jason Donavan ( yes that guy! ) era.
Top marks to Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
I commend this to the house!

The Sound Of Music Soundtrack
"High on a hill with a lonely goata...."
This isn't even a contest, because it's so obviously the soundtrack to Hannah Montana. Either season's will work, and the soundtrack to High School Musical would work almost as well. Not to mention on August 17th, High School Musical 2 comes out, and then you can have THAT soundtrack, too! Disney makes my life significantly better on a daily basis.

You know that ain't shit when we'll be gettin' lots of tit - great for the family to sing!
All eyez on me...album of Tupac Shakur !!!
Soundtracks from all the musicals. My eyes lit up when I saw someone mentioned "The Sound of Music." That was my favorite. My family used to sing along to it all the time.
I also agree with Taj Mahal, Johnny Cash, and good stuff like that. I think Jerry Garcia did a children's album? Can't remember. Bluegrass is good.
Knowing the musicals will educate your children to many elements of the American Songbook. You can't go wrong there. Grease, Sound of Music, King and I, Oklahoma, West Side Story, HMS Pinafore, Carousel, The Boyfriend, Annie, A Chorus Line--that sort of thing. Wonderful.
After that, sing along to Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Jerome Kern, Hoagy Carmichael--Sinatra's whole catalog (except when he got too old), Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney. Then Manhattan Transfer and Voices Unlimited.
Ann and Nancy Wilson (from Heart) used to play ukelele's in the car when they went on trips. I think they have an older sister too, and the three of them played and sang together on the way to grandma's or whatever. I've heard them talk about it fondly. The Wilson bros (Beach Boys--Brian, Carl, Dennis) also used to part sing in the car and with cousin Mike Love when they'd get together over holidays. There's nothing like it.
Has to be Marilyn Manson, "The Beautiful People"
