my son will be a sophomore in HS this year, and we were wondering about goals for this season. Last year when he was a freshman, he came into the season with a few summer miles under his belt, but not much of a base. his coach had them averaging about 25-30 miles per week, and towards the end of the season he consistently ran in the low 18's for 5k with a PR of 17:53.
this summer we've run a lot of easy miles with no speedwork to speak of. we just kind of picked it up when we felt like it toward the end of a run, but no track work or structured speed workouts. we've averaged 35-40 mpw. he's running a 5k this weekend with a goal of breaking 18. we think he ought to be able to break 17 by the end of the season.
thoughts? suggestions? this is a very small school, and the cc coach, though a very nice guy, isn't all that knowledgable about the sport. he's given us the okay to supplement my son's workouts, but we don't want to over do it.
thanks for your help.
