Lots of choices other than Bono's band:
Dropkick Murphys, The Pogues, Flogging Molly, The Tossers
I favor the latter.

Young Dubliners
Dropkick Murphys is not an Irish band. While they play Irish punk, they are from Boston. It's still great music, but the band is not Irish.
Great Big Sea is another band that plays good Irish music, but it is Canadian.
Anyway, my favorites are:
Young Dubliners
U2
The Chieftans
The Thrills
The Coors (okay, this is more poppish, but they are capable of good Irish jams)
And I would agree with The Pogues (although they are an English/Irish mix)
Well, The Tossers are from the southside of Chicago, but you can't listen to 'em and consider them anything other than an Irish punk band. I said "Irish," not "from" or "of Ireland."
Galway bands of the 80s were fantastic... The Stunning, Toasted Heretic.
Something Happens also from around that era.
Yeah, well you did preface your statement mentioning "Bono's band", so the implication was that they should be from Ireland...
Westlife or Boyzone, its definatelty one of them.
The Saw Doctors.
The waterboys if ethnicity does not play and the frames bc they are the real deal.
Bill Murray's SNL Irish wedding band!
The Hitchers from Limerick
I will check out some of these bands that I have not heard of like Young Dubliners. Thanks for that.
I am being master of the obvious, but you could put Van Morrison in front of a middle school band and the music would be true. His early work with Them was a breakthrough new sound at the time.
Rollerskate Skinny. Check them out.
Hothouse Flowers is one of the best live groups I've seen.
Flogging Molly, Great Big Sea are good, but not Irish. So the real question is are we looking for Irish Rock bands, or celtic-rock bands??
Anyway, any thoughts on The Frames?
My Bloody Valentine
How is U2 Irish, isnt Bono English, First Black 47 is Irish and so is Dropkick Murphy's if you actually listen to some of there music it has to with Irish history, not all of it but some.
the frames
I just told you guys who the best Irish rock band was god dammit, can you hear ? The Saw Doctors !!!!!!
