Okay, here's the scenario: I've coached individuals of all ages for about 6 years now. With the athletes I help, they all do extremely well and are very satisfied with the results typically all far surpassing their goals. I do it part time, for free and have never really felt capable of moving up to doing it "professionally".
What type of indicators would suggest thinking about doing it for a living? Everyone around me says I would be great at it, but, from what I can tell, the standard approach is this: 1) start at high school level and work for a few years 2) move up to a JC or assistant coaching position at some D XXX school (fill in the blank with I, II or III) and 3) wait for someone up the food chain to quit, die or resign and try to get their position.
Is there any other way to go about it? Also, I am not a "political" person and have an intuition that college coaching is as much about politics as it is about coaching ability...if not more. Is this true?
