Last week my daughter returned from Stanford's XC running camp. One of the more interesting thing she told me was from a presentation by Peter Tegan, XC coach. He described the profile of the optimal D1 recruit.
Paraphrasing, he said it is someone that finishes second or third in state, and ideally, second on their team. They seem to have problems with the "coddled champions" because the adjustment to D1 is harder for them. No long being the top dog is very tough to come to terms with.
The kids with almost as much talent, but was not coddled is more coachable and more times than not, better realize their upside potential.
