Can high school boys have faster leg speed than their counterparts just because they are more physically developed than them? Can someone's speed improve as they mature physically?

well have a baby race a 20 year old guy, see who wins. yes your speed improves with maturity in most instances.
My leg speed developed as I got older. I didn't grow dramatically before my senior yr of high school or drastically change my training but in my previous years of high school I struggled to come close to 60 for a 400, never broke it and had pretty much resigned myself to being a 2 miler and in college 10k guy. Early on in the track season we were doing some repeat 400s and I had been feeling pretty good throughout the workout running 63-65 fairly easily and on the last one ended up busting out a 58. Everyone on the team was going crazy because my lack of leg speed had become somewhat of a joke on the team. Needless to say I ran a lot of prs that year. I ended up running a 53 for the 400 that year, very pleased. I ran a 51 my freshman year of college. I'll never be a middle distance stud but now at least I can compete. I always thought this was odd, ever happen to anyone else?
man, you went from not being able to break 60 to a 51? I would be pleased also.
My freshmen year of highschool I had a pr of 1:07 in a 400m leg of the distance medley. I ran my guts out but was slow. As a sophomore I ran 58 at the end of a 400m repeat workout with my teammates. I really don't know what I can do now but it must have came naturally as I grew a couple of inches. All I did from the period between those two seasons was easy runs, very little speed work.
do all of us a favor and never post here again, please, thank you.
Oh yeah? from my freshman year of high school to my junior year of college, i went from 60 to 56. Yeah, yeah....eat that guys...f*** improvement.
i had a teammate in college who ran an all out 200 in 31 seconds, that is slow. he did run about 1530 for 5k though, pretty good considering how slow he was.
this would be a dream come true for me. you sure you didn't change anything?
I've thought about this a lot and here are the only things that changed. I was injured during most of cross season my senior year so I didn't do a whole lot of mileage that fall. I grew slightly that year, we are talking half an inch maybe. The 53 was a relay split so it could have been off by a second or 2 but thats what I count as a pr. My pr went down to a 51 in college because of some key factors. I did grow about an inch that year. Also I had a coach that tried to convert me to a mid distance guy. I was recruited by a pretty solid distance coach whom I really liked but he left before I got there and the coach they hired was more of a mid-distance guy but he had mostly true distance types(steeple, 5-10k guys) on the team and I had decent speed so he wanted me to run the 800-1500. Like I said in my previous post I was primarily a 2miler in high school and went from that to running 800m in fairly good sized meets, it was kinda weird. Anyways I did more speedwork that year then I've ever done in my life and thats why my pr dropped more. He loved intervals and I did a ton of 200-300m repeats, 150m floats, stuff like that. My lower distance prs dropped a lot but I knew that wasn't where my talent was so I transferred for several reasons and now I'm primarily a 5k guy. I've discussed this with my current coach and he has said that it just sounds like my body matured.

As long as it's not one of those Brazilian super babies.
I am pretty sure I am the opposite, i was a 400-800 guy in high school and freshman year in college(51-2:02 in high school & 50-1:56 college) Now i can only run a 53, but my milage is almost quadrubled at 110 a week. Junior year in college i only went 4:19 in the mile with a 14:40 5K and 30:40 10K. I still can't believe that I was a 400-800 guy in high school.
