Haha. Yeah, Suft Dude, thanks for the stellar resume. Enthralling stuff.
I too ran against Billy in H.S. but never saw much of him after the first 800M in XC. I wasn't a bad runner either, though I'm sure my performances pale in comparison with the World Junior Oregon Team led by the posters in this thread.
What I remember th most...Watching Billy, one got the feeling that he was effortless. He never really seemed to be pushing hard, though he at times truly was.
Cooling down with that guy he was always very easy going, good natured. As someone from an opposing team, he was always gracious, and laughed off his times/wins, etc.
Legend? A legend to those who ran during that time period. In the annals of Oregon lore, he has a small place, though no, probably not a McChesney, Pre, Rupp... Had he gone on and been a Duck, we might be having a different conversation.
He did run some ridiculous times all by himself, on 3A and 4A courses, many course records at the time...I bet a few still stand. He wasn't in 4A, true, but some of the performances in XC especially were pretty impressive, as he was basically time-trialing the courses.
As far as credentials, look at his Pre-mile, and his race where he dusted a lot of guys in an impressive collegiate field at Alton Baker.
But yeah...effortless. Smooth. Nice guy.
No idea what he is up to, as I'm no longer in Oregon.
