On October 13, 2002 two of the world's most dominate athletes will go to war. The supremely fit and fast Paula
Radcliffe (GB) will take on reigning Chicago champion and
World Recorder holder Catherine Ndereba (Ken) in what is sure to be a new women's best. The rest of the womens field
will be contesting for third place and boast of great talent: Svetlana Zakharova (Rus) 2:22:31, Yoko Shibui (Jap)
2:23:11, Masako Chibi (Jap) 2:25:11, Deena Drossin (USA) 2:26:58, and Jen Rhines (USA) debut. While on the men's side question are yet to be answered by Khalid Khannouchi fitness and Paul Tergat readiness to snatch his first marathon victory; however, no such questions appear for the women!
The women's race can almost be scripted beforehand: Paula
will set a blazing first half and dare her competitors to go with her; however, Catherine will be lurking within striking distance. The race should began between the 13 -
17 mile mark, where Catherine will definetly make her lethal second half charge. The frontrunning of Paula Radcliffe will also have a very strong 2nd half and it will
be interesting to see if Paula's supreme speed can hold of
Catherine's fantasic finish.
Both Paula and Catherine have displayed that they are now in super-form. Paula 14:31 on the track 5000m, 30:01.09
European 10000m runaway, and 8:23 3000m speed. Catherine
have showed her recent form by reeling in Asmae Leghzaoui (Mor) at the Crim 10 miler. Leghzaoui led at 8 miles; however, Catherine put 12 seconds on Leghzaoui(the 8k and 10k Road Recordholder )by the finish.
