i'm sitting here doing absolutely nothing just waiting to go out for the long run - 16 miles. it's damn hot out and i'm waiting until at least 6:30 to go.
How was your long run today?
How far did you go?
How did you deal with the dread?

i got lucky and it started raining...absolutely made my day
what dread? it's like brushing your teeth..just something you do!
it is for me at least, if you really feel that way just find someone to run with.
it's more anxiety than dread, i think
I know what you mean. I get quite anxious before races, when It's 10mins to start I start remembering just how incredibly painful the last 2k of a 5k is, you know that feeling where you're in a race and you're thinking "I'm crazy, why the hell am I doing this to my body?" then for some reason 1min before the start I get very calm... does this happen to anyone else?!
i love the long run. f you guys
funny you bring this up. I went out at 12 for a 16 milers also, not very smart, I know. It's pretty humid here in PA and about 88 degrees. The run was horrendous, I was sweating tons by about 30minutes. I got lucky and spotted a water tap meant for runners and bikers on this road I ran on for the first time, about 45 minutes in. It was an extremely lucky break, but after another 40min I was struggling again, my legs were in pain, I was really dehydrated, I made it to my campus, got more water there, went to finish the last 35 minutes of the run, after 10 minutes it was so painful, I thought I wasn't going to make it back without collapsing. I slowed down and tried to relax and cut the run off 5 minutes short. The last 15 minutes were terrible, I really had to focus on not stopping because that would only make it longer before I got to the water. You should be better off now, have fun.
I know how you feel. Even though I love long runs, I always get antsy before them. Mine is only 8 miles right now, so it's not as bad. I am waiting until 7:30 or 8 tonight to run because I was unable to get up this morning and it is very hot right now. I hate waiting around all day.

I'm never too worried about the heat or anything like that. My major concern is this: Will I suddenly have the unstoppable urge to take a monster dump 90 minutes into the run? And will I be anywhere near a friendly bathroom if this happens? If I have to abandon a run, this is always the reason.

Exactly. You boys better stop fretting and start enjoying that shit. I've been out 8 weeks with a stress fracture and can't wait to get my first 20 miler in. It's all I think about in the pool... so quite bitching and start hammering.
Back when I did long runs:
1. I did it first thing in the AM
2. I drank a good amount of fluids the previous PM
3. I went to be early
Can't say I dreaded my long runs.
81 minutes
it went well because for the first day in a while the humidity had gone down. the course wasn't hilly and i kept a really solid pace for quite a while.
i wasn't dreading. i had my favorite shoes, favorite shorts, and was ready to roll in the morning.
I did 16 today too, just bright and early. Went by fast enough, once I get into it I'm fine. Finished up a 95 mile week for me, felt good.
I know what you mean. I had to do 100 -150 ladders today and boy were those long!
I did 18. I did not dread it. I really enjoy covering long distances because you see so much more. I usually enjoy my speed sessions and long runs the most. It is those short 2nd runs that I dread.
God, how I wish it was 88 out when I started this morning--at 8 O'CLOCK! I know aclimation plays a factor, but I'm going to bet it was more humid here too...
Still, I did less than you: Easy 14 this morning.
Mine went pretty shitty. Our team just happens to do long runs on the hilliest course around. If it was flat it would not be a big deal at all. Is there any benefit or downfall to doing long runs on the hills?
haha yea, usually I don't find these kinds of conditions too bad, but I think it might have something to do with the sick pack of beers and the pint of ice cream I finished off last night. I definitely hydrated before bed and in the morning though..
good luck this summer, I'm sure you have it worse off than I.
I got 16 this morning, RIGHT as soon as I finished it started moonsooning outside. I mean crazy wind and rain, I was glad it stayed away until I was done.
I love getting them done in the morning and enjoying the rest of the day. My favorite part of long runs is the shower and going back to sleep.
gahh i know how you feel, made that mistake many a time myself. sometimes you can get fooled if you have long stretches of nice weather and you think you can run at any time of the day again, and then you remember why it's the middle of the summer.
and for those of who are saying i can't wait to get out and do it so stop complaining, maybe i should rephrase the original post. i dread the wait, the anticipation. once it starts, yeah, it's cool. but don't tell me that 70 mins into 100 minute run you don't say to yourself 'oh, f***'.
fortunately, for me, waiting paid off. left the house at around 7, covered the 16 in about an hour thirty nine, so i was pretty happy. by the time i was finished the sun was setting so it wasn't as hot.
now start the cycle over again.
