thanks.
the rest of you are not funny, cute or accurate. if you had a friend who died from making a mistake like pre did you might look at life a little differently. no one should drink and drive but it happens every day. stop mocking the loss of life. a family lost a son and brother.
I don't think it is right to mock either, but I also don't think we should idolize and hold him up as a hero. I personally can't stand Pre. Did he run well for a collegiate. Sure. Did he ever win a major championship. No. Was he the best of all time in the US. Uh...NO! Unfortunately, if you die young you get that label based on what could have been.

Bzzt. Wrong answer. Pre started out as a Communications major but later switched to a Home Economics major.
Let's be fair and balanced - Pre made a mistake in judgment, and one for which he paid dearly. His tragedy should continue to warn all.
As far as idolizing him goes, irrespective of the cause of his demise, there is a lot to admire. First, he was a working class kid from a rough rural logging town - he earned everything he had. Coming from lesser circumstances doesn't make one in and of itself a better person, but I can't imagine someone at a high level in our sport with less of a sense of entitlement than Pre. Second, like it or not, he was absolutely charismatic - and brought lots of people to the sport. We need that today. Third, he was a great, voracious competitor, who may not have had the talent (his legspeed appeared limited) of some others. I am not sure his hyperaggressive approach works for everyone, but he made it work and he was exceedingly entertaining to watch. And fourth, and how easy it is to forget, he took on the establishment to make it far more possible for the athletes to financially benefit from the sport. Curt Flood is quite rightly admired for doing roughly the same for baseball - I have no problems with giving Pre his due in his efforts to look out for the athlete's welfare. His career may have been incomplete in many respects (and his untimely death no doubt was a factor), but his record as a truly stirring figure in American athletes is not in doubt. I think critics to some extent are suffering from "Pre" fatigue, and
I can understand that - but on balance, a great, great figure in American athletics.
I agree with your points, but I still just don't like him. In all honesty, I probably dislike the people who hype him up and use him as a marketing tool more than I did like him. I prefer to idolize guys like Michael Johnson, Bob Kennedy, Jim Ryun, and Bill Rodgers. These guys have done more than Pre ever did athletically and institutionally, but they don't have the obvious character flaws like rebellion, over indulgence, arrogance, etc.
I guess things just sell better if you are a dead, mythical great one.

Funniest post of the year!
Rodgers drank a lot. I wonder how many times he got behind the wheel when he was impaired.
Ryun's religious views are not everyone's cup of tea.
Johnson has a level of arrogance, but then we all do.
"Mistake" for drinking and driving minimalizes it. He make a bad decision. For most of us (and my bet is that the majority of people have driven when impaired), we do not pay for those bad decisions with our lives.
